Conch Pride was shining bright Friday night as KWHS Football honored the incredible legacy of George Mira, Sr., one of Key West’s most iconic athletes and an island son whose name still echoes across generations.
A graduate of Key West High School, a star at the University of Miami, and a standout in the NFL, George Mira, Sr. began his journey right here on our Conch football and baseball fields — where his talent, grit, and heart first captured the attention of fans who knew he was destined for greatness.
KWHS proudly paid tribute to his legacy by welcoming his family as honorary captains including Jason Mira, his son, Rose Thomas, his sister, Yvette Talbott, his niece and School Board Member as well as his extended family.
Even through lightning delays, the family stood strong at midfield for the coin toss as the stadium paused for a moment of silence to honor George’s life, accomplishments, and the pride he brought to Key West.
Players wore a #10 decal on their helmets, and Coach John Hughes and the team presented a commemorative helmet to Jason and the Mira family — a heartfelt symbol of gratitude from the Conch community.
We are proud to remember and honor George Mira, Sr., a true Key West legend whose spirit continues to inspire our players, our school, and our island.
