The School District honored George Fernandez with a Community GEM (Great Educational Moments) Award in recognition of his longstanding commitment to arts education and student enrichment. Fernandez has generously sponsored numerous live theater events tailored for students throughout the Keys, helping bring performances such as Puppy Pals, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Yuk Show, Page Turners, and more to local audiences.
Thanks to his contributions, more than 4,000 students have experienced live theater events this school year alone, expanding access to the arts and inspiring creativity among young learners. Fernandez has also supported the Key West High School Fashion Club and remains active in numerous community initiatives where help is needed.
“George is always there when there is a need, and is not only generous, but more than happy to help,” said Superintendent Edward Tierney. “He is truly a GEM for our community as a whole, and we thank him for all that he does for our school district and our students.”
Additional GEM Award Recipients Recognized
Several other individuals were also honored with GEM Awards, including:
Wenskerry Jourdain and Mylins Casseus, Key West High School students in the MOVE (Monroe Occupation and Vocational Experiences) program, for dedicating countless internship hours supporting operations at Gerald Adams Elementary School. The MOVE Program partners with local businesses to provide career training for students preparing to enter the workforce after graduation. More information about the program is available at keysschools.com.
Allens Alexandre, who earned a silver medal at the state wrestling competition.
Zaylee Hayes, a Key West High School student who took swift action upon noticing a teacher in medical distress, summoning help and potentially saving the teacher’s life.
Jerry Harbin, Volleyball Coach at Sugarloaf School, for his volunteer service and dedication to the school’s volleyball program, contributing countless hours over the past seven years.
Updates and Board Actions
In other business, Patrick Lefere, Executive Director of Operations and Planning, provided an update on Rex Weech Field. He reported that the project remains on track for completion by September 30, noting that the on‑site training center is nearly finished, with continued progress on the concession stand and museum.
The Board also voted on an action item to appoint representatives to the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA). The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization serves as the collective voice for Florida’s 67 elected school boards and supports student achievement through leadership development and public education advocacy.
Dr. Sue Woltanski was elected as the district’s primary representative to the FSBA, with Yvette Mira‑Talbott named as alternate.
