The Monroe County School District honors the life and legacy of Mr. John J. Welsh, who finished his race on July 10, 2025, leaving behind 35 years of dedicated service that forever shaped our schools and community.
After courageously serving his country in the Vietnam War, Mr. Welsh began his educational career in 1975 as a social studies teacher at Glynn Archer Elementary School. From the very beginning, his commitment to students was evident, and his impact only grew as he served in various leadership roles—Assistant Principal of Sugarloaf School, Dean and Assistant Principal of Key West High School, and most notably, Principal of Key West High School from 2002 to 2010.
Mr. Welsh led with humility, strength, and unwavering patience. His personal mission was to make a difference in the lives of students every single day—especially those who needed it most. Thousands of young lives were impacted by his compassion, guidance, and dedication.
Beyond the classroom, Mr. Welsh was an accomplished marathon runner, known for tackling challenging races like the Pike’s Peak Marathon in Colorado. His determination and endurance mirrored the way he approached life: with purpose, perseverance, and heart.
He was deeply devoted to his family, his country, and his students. That love was the foundation of his life and remains his greatest legacy.
Mr. Welsh is survived by his sons, John Welsh and Stephen Welsh. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Memorial service details will be shared with the community as they become available.
His testimony of love, service, and strength lives on in the hearts of all he inspired.
