Edward Tierney will be new school superintendent

Edward Tierney was selected by the Monroe County School Board to fill the shoes of Theresa Axford who is retiring at the end of July.

Tierney came to Monroe County in 2025 from Palm Beach County School District where he previously served as Deputy Superintendent of Schools.

Tierney has experience as a teacher, K-12 school principal, high school principal, Instructional Superintendent for the Central Region of Palm Beach County, and the district’s Chief of Staff.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Florida Atlantic University. As Deputy Superintendent, he involved in all aspects of leadership in the district. He was also recognized as Principal of the Year on two occasions. Prior to his experience in the field of education, he was a decorated Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps serving in Rwanda, Somalia and in Operation Desert Storm.
