After a biking accident over Winter Break, our 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Perry, reached out to SRO Deputy Daniels to see if he would be willing to provide a bike safety presentation for our students before Spring Break. Deputy Daniels then partnered with Officer Pointer from MHS to assist with helmet fittings, and from there, even more community agencies joined in to support this important initiative.
We were incredibly fortunate to welcome Elizabeth Cabrera, Program Manager with the KiDZ Neuroscience Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, who led an engaging WalkSafe/BikeSafe presentation. Ivona Coleman, M.S., Community Health Improvement Manager, also joined us to support this effort.
Thanks to the dedication of these amazing partners and volunteers, students in grades 1–5 received brand-new, properly fitted bike helmets along with a valuable refresher on bike safety.
Our goal is to continue this program each year with 1st and 4th grades, ensuring students consistently have access to properly fitted helmets and age-appropriate bike safety education as they grow.
