Plantation Key School’s Ocean Guardian Club has successfully planted the fifth garden in the district, securing Year 2 designation for Monroe County School District as the first Ocean Guardian School District on Florida’s east coast, as recognized through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the University of Wisconsin–Collaborative for Water Conservation (UWCK).
The native species garden was thoughtfully planned and planted by Mrs. Wenzel’s Garden Club, with participation from students in grades K–3 and support from three middle school student leaders. The project highlights student leadership, environmental stewardship, and community collaboration.
Special thanks are extended to the Monroe County Fire Department and CBT Construction for preparing the garden area for student use. Appreciation is also given to parent volunteers and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for assisting students with plant installation. Additional gratitude goes to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Mama’s Garden Center for their support in sourcing native plants.
The Ocean Guardian Club also acknowledges the continued support of Superintendent Tierney, Principal Taylor, Assistant Principal Court, and Ms. Horsley, whose leadership and encouragement made this project possible.
This milestone reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to environmental education, conservation, and student‑led sustainability initiatives.
