GEM Award

Superintendent Ed Tierney and Board Chair John presented Braelyn Dixon with a GEMS award at Tuesday's board meeting.

Braelyn, an 8th grader at Key Largo School, conducted an impressive science investigation on how invasive species impact native plants. Her research showed that oils from the invasive Sapodilla tree reduced germination of native Rouge Berry seeds by 35%β€”a significant finding for protecting our local ecosystems.

Braelyn presented her work at the 71st State Science & Engineering Fair and earned Special Recognition plus a cash award from the Indian River Regional Science Fair!

We’re so proud of her dedication to science and environmental stewardship!
