We are incredibly grateful to the Ocean Reef Community Foundation for generously supporting the creation of our new Sensory Calming Area at KLS. This beautiful and thoughtfully designed space has quickly become a favorite among our students.
The Sensory Calming Area is designed to help children regulate their nervous systems, recharge, and return to class feeling centered and ready to learn. Through carefully curated experiences that engage sight, sound, touch, and deep pressure, the room supports students’ emotional well-being in a safe and nurturing environment.
✨ Sight
Students are immersed in soothing visuals, including a mesmerizing bubble tube, softly glowing wall lights, and interactive light cubes that change color with a gentle touch. A projection of the earth or moon illuminates the ceiling, while vibrant fiber optic lights cascade over a cozy bean bag, creating a peaceful and engaging atmosphere.
🎶 Sound
The gentle hum of the bubble tube provides steady background noise, complemented by a sound machine playing calming ocean waves and nature sounds to promote relaxation.
🤲 Touch
A luxuriously soft carpet invites students to unwind. Comfort items such as a weighted elephant and ultra-soft sloth provide calming tactile input and a reassuring sense of security.
💚 Deep Pressure
The sensory lounger gently applies comforting pressure to help students feel grounded and relaxed. An optional vibrating mat enhances the experience and has quickly become a favorite feature. A cozy canoe offers a small, safe space where students can regroup and reset, while the weighted elephant and sloth provide the warmest, most comforting hugs.
This special space is available to any student from any classroom with adult supervision. We are deeply thankful for community partners like the Ocean Reef Community Foundation who make meaningful initiatives like this possible and continue to invest in the well-being and success of our students.
