Fourth grade students recently participated in engaging, AVID-aligned math activities that emphasized collaboration, critical thinking, and real-world application of mathematical concepts.
In Ms. Sosa’s home base, students took part in a Socratic seminar where they reflected on their learning and deepened their understanding of mathematics. They applied the coordinate plane and explored relationships between two variables, interpreted values within meaningful contexts, generated rules for number sequences, and analyzed slopes. Through discussion and reflection, students demonstrated strong mathematical reasoning and communication skills.
Students in Ms. Nyman and Ms. Maresma’s home bases engaged in a collaborative group activity in which they assumed specific roles and worked together to solve problems across multiple math topics. They shared problem-solving strategies, discussed how key words influence the choice of operations in word problems, and confidently showcased their work in preparation for presentations.
These activities highlight our students’ ability to think critically, work collaboratively, and take ownership of their learning while building a strong foundation in mathematics.
