At the board's workshop held January 28th at 3:30 p.m. in Marathon, the Florida School Board Association (FSBA) went over the timeline for the Superintendent Search with the board, as well as discussing the potential job description, salary, citizen survey and citizen input sessions and the interview schedule for applicants. At the regular business meeting of the board, they followed up by voting to approve the proposed timeline as well as approving the citizen survey presented by the FSBA. The other issues discussed in the workshop will continue in the planning process. The next board meeting will be held on February 11th at 5 p.m. at Key West's city hall.

    Board Meeting, December 10th, 2024

Monroe County School Board members discussed plans for the upcoming search for a new Superintendent of Schools at a workshop held prior to their regular meeting Tuesday. Current Superintendent Theresa Axford will be retiring after the end of this school year. Members of the Florida School Board Association (FSBA) attended the workshop remotely and addressed the board on the timeline they recommend for the process. The FSBA has extensive experience helping other Florida counties with similar searches and will be assisting throughout the process in the Keys.

The timeline includes doing a survey of citizens asking about their priorities; holding a series of community forums throughout the Keys to gain citizen input and answer questions; having board discussions to determine salary and educational requirements; advertising the position and, finally, interviews and public meet-and-greets with candidates prior to the choosing of the new superintendent. The surveys and forums are expected to take place beginning in February; the process will culminate with the final decision taking place in early May. The new superintendent will begin work in early July, prior to the beginning of the 2025-26 school year.

Members of the board stressed the process needs to be done county-wide, including all areas of the Keys so the candidates can become familiar with the county and so that citizens from all areas can take part in the process.

    Board Meeting, November 19, 2024

Harry Russell, the district’s Executive Director of Human Resources, spoke to the board about upcoming plans for the search for a new School Superintendent. The current Superintendent, Theresa Axford, plans to retire in the summer of 2025. Russell gave an overview of the timeline for the search process, which will begin soon now that the election is completed and the board is in place for the coming year.
