• Assistive Technology

  • Assistive technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities.

    • AT can be low-tech: communication boards made of cardboard or fuzzy felt or high-tech: special-purpose computers.
    • AT can be hardware: prosthetics, mounting systems, wheelchairs, walkers, braces, and positioning devices or computer hardware or software: special switches, keyboards, screen readers, eye gaze systems, communication programs, and pointing devices.
    • AT can be part of UDL (Universal Design for Learning) as inclusive learning materials and curriculum aids.

Assistive Technology is ever-growing and can be found all around us. AT services and support within the schools are ongoing and can be provided both through a universal design and/or on an individual basis. Assistive technology needs are considered annually at all IEP meetings and any AT that is determined a need to show mastery of skills will be added as an accommodation.
