Tier 1 – Core Instruction – All Students
Tier 1 encompasses the entire school with core instructions and basic interventions. The core instruction for behavior, character education, and resiliency in Monroe County consists of lessons through AL's Pals (PreK), Studies Weekly Well-Being (grades K-5), and district created materials covering topics such as grit, perseverance, empathy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, gratitude, responsibility, honesty, mentorship, and citizenship (Grades 6-12). This structure helps to build positive relationships between staff and students. It also includes proactive classroom management strategies aimed at creating a supportive atmosphere. These include PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) and Monroe County School District's behavioral expectations guide, iBELieve. Students who do not respond to these interventions may move into Tier 2.
Tier 2 – Small Groups/Interventions - Some Students
Some students need a little extra assistance in meeting behavioral goals. These students receive Tier 2 support which may include small groups, lunch bunches, or daily Check-In Check-Outs. The school counselor or the school social worker typically provide this level of support, but a teacher or other staff member with a positive relationship with the student may also be involved. Students who respond to these interventions may move into Tier 1. Students who do not respond to these interventions may move into Tier 3. Parental consent is obtained prior to a student receiving this level of support.
Tier 3 – Individual Support/Interventions – A Few Students
A subset of students has significant challenges that do not respond to the interventions and supports in Tier 1 or Tier 2. Tier 3 gives these students individualized support. School social workers typically provide this level of support and meet with the student weekly to provide skill-based instruction based on the area of need. If, through discussion with the parent, it is determined that the students would benefit from therapeutic counseling, school counselors and school social workers are available to help make referrals to outside agencies for this level of support. Parental consent is obtained prior to a student receiving this level of support.
