Superintendent, School Board Chair and KWHS Principal with two students who excellent academically

At last night’s School Board meeting, Superintendent Tierney and Board Chair Dick proudly recognized two exceptional Key West High School seniors, Jack Bridger and Garrett Kinnune, for earning distinction as National Commended Scholars, an honor awarded to students whose PSAT/NMSQT performance ranks among the top students in the nation. Through their academic excellence, leadership, character, and service to others, both young men exemplify the very best of Key West High School and our community.

Jack Bridger is a scholar-athlete whose accomplishments reflect a relentless pursuit of excellence. With a 4.564 GPA, Jack has distinguished himself as a top academic performer while serving as captain of the Academic Challenge Team, helping lead Monroe County to the finals of a statewide competition. His commitment to serving others is equally impressive, with more than 100 hours of community service that includes tutoring students for the SAT and mentoring middle school students through a chess club he helped lead and grow. Jack also serves as vice president of Mu Alpha Theta, is a former treasurer of the organization, competes on the Key West High School tennis team, and has represented his community through Florida Boys State and the University of Florida’s prestigious Student Science Training Program.

Garrett Kinnune is a respected leader whose dedication to scholarship, service, and citizenship has earned the admiration of his peers and teachers alike. Maintaining a 3.75 GPA while challenging himself with Advanced Placement coursework and four years of NJROTC Naval Science, Garrett has demonstrated both academic rigor and personal discipline. He serves as the Academic Officer for the school’s ROTC program, was selected to attend Florida Boys State, and contributes his talents to both the jazz and marching bands. Known for his integrity, reliability, and willingness to help others, Garrett generously serves his school, community, and church, Lord of the Seas. As he pursues admission to a military academy, he continues to exemplify leadership, character, and a commitment to service.

Together, Jack and Garrett represent the highest ideals of scholarship, leadership, and community service. Their achievements have brought pride to Key West High School and inspired those around them to strive for excellence. We are proud to recognize both young men as GEMS Award recipients and celebrate the Conch Pride they demonstrate each day through their accomplishments, character, and dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
