During our recent See Something, Say Something observance in March, we reminded students that speaking up isn’t only about reporting threats—it’s about alerting a trusted adult anytime something doesn’t seem right. Zaylee Hayes, a sophomore at Key West High School, embodies this message in the most meaningful way. Recently, after attending class, she noticed her teacher did not look well. Rather than go on with her day, Zaylee immediately reported her concern to the school nurse. Because she chose to see something and say something, the teacher received urgently needed medical attention. Zaylee’s awareness, courage, and quick action may very well have saved a life. She is a powerful example of how one student’s voice can make a tremendous difference and we are happy to award her with this GEMS.
