On Friday, Sugarloaf hosted the Special Olympics culmination event—a scrimmage with Gerald Adams. Both teams were excited to showcase the soccer skills they have been practicing, and they truly showed up and showed out!
The community rallied behind this event, beginning with MCSD officers, referred to as the Guardians of the Flame. During the opening ceremony, they walked with the Flame of Hope, carried by an athlete, to signify the start of the game and promote inclusion. This is a cherished tradition in Special Olympics events, and we are so thankful to our SRO, Officer Tedesco, for making it happen.
SLS Student Council members joined by carrying the flags for the Pledge is Allegiance. Our own Mr. Walden welcomed parents and teams with inspiring and encouraging words during the opening ceremony. Slice of Paradise provided lunch at a generous discount, and Keys Vineyard Church treated everyone to ice cream!
During the game, Unified Partners encouraged athletes, gained control of the ball, and made intentional passes to ensure everyone had a chance to shine. It was another incredible and inspiring display of inclusion, support, and teamwork. Friendships were also formed between players from both schools, highlighting the outstanding sportsmanship of all involved.
Special thanks to Coach Jim, who was unable to attend the event but dedicated months of his time to preparing the athletes, whose readiness was clearly evident during the game. Two 8th-grade students, Ellen and Alice, willingly stepped up to help coach the team in his absence.
It truly takes a village, and our village has shown up all year to support SLS Special Olympics athletes and Unified Partners in promoting inclusion and providing students with disabilities the opportunity to participate in organized sports. This concludes our sports season, and we are already excited to see what next year has in store!
