Marathon High School students joined schools, colleges and universities across the country this week in honoring the lives lost during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

As part of the 9/11 Advocacy Project, students placed American flags outside the school, with each flag representing a life lost on 9/11. The display serves as a powerful visual reminder of the nearly 3,000 people who died that day and helps ensure their lives and the events of September 11 are remembered by a new generation of students.

The project was sponsored locally by MHS Champions for Change and WestCare, Inc., with support from numerous MHS and community organization partners who helped place the flags.

More than two decades after the attacks, many of today's students were born years after September 11, making opportunities to learn about and reflect on the day's significance especially meaningful.

Through the display, the MHS community joined others across the nation in a simple but powerful message: We remember.
