Students in the Marathon Middle High School STEM program recently took learning beyond the classroom during a visit to the Caribbean Hurricane Preparedness event at Marathon Airport.
During the experience, students learned how scientists track and predict hurricanes, including the critical data collected by Hurricane Hunter aircraft that fly directly into the center of these powerful storms. They explored how meteorologists analyze storm conditions to better understand and forecast hurricane behavior.
A highlight of the trip was touring a C-130 aircraft, where students examined the specialized instruments used during flights, including devices that are dropped into storms to gather real-time data. Several students even had the opportunity to sit in the pilot’s seat, giving them a firsthand look at the aircraft used in hurricane research.
The trip provided a unique, hands-on opportunity for students to connect classroom learning to real-world science and careers in meteorology and aviation.
