On Friday, March 27, the Educational Coalition for Monroe County, along with its youth organization MHS Champions for Change, hosted the Second Annual Countywide Leadership Summit. High school students from Marathon High School, Coral Shores High School, Key West High School, and the College of the Florida Keys Academy came together for a full day of leadership development, prevention education, networking, and meaningful dialogue.
The summit opened with an inspiring message from Deputy Superintendent Amber Acevedo, who encouraged students to view leadership as everyday acts of kindness, courage, and collaboration. The opening session set the tone for a day centered on empowerment, connection, and positive change.
Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Oscar Negrón delivered a DEA address, praising Champions for Change for their impactful work and strong prevention outcomes at Marathon High School. His remarks reinforced the importance of youth leadership in creating safer, healthier school communities.
Throughout the day, students participated in interactive workshops led by Vive18 youth leadership and prevention speakers, who also facilitated discussions on real-world topics affecting today’s youth. These sessions provided students with practical skills, peer connection opportunities, and a platform for open conversation.
Students also had the opportunity to engage with representatives from local community organizations, including AHEC, the Domestic Abuse Shelter, the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County, the Monroe County Coalition, and WestCare, Guidance Care Center Inc. These partners shared valuable resources and highlighted support services available to youth throughout the county.
The event was made possible through the generous support of Hawk’s Cay Resort & Villas, Marathon Elks Lodge #2139, Marathon High School, Monroe County School District, and the Rotary Club of Marathon, under the direction of Christina and Martina Belotti.
The Second Annual Countywide Leadership Summit successfully brought students together from across Monroe County to foster leadership, strengthen prevention efforts, and build lasting connections that will continue to impact their schools and communities.
