Veterans remember 9/11

During the week of September 8, 2025 the Marathon High School Champions for Change hosted the 9/11 Advocacy Project on the MHS campus.  Students had an opportunity to learn more about September 11, 2001 and to put up 2,996 flags on campus each representing a life that was lost on 9/11.

Many community as well as school organizations and teams were involved in this project.  This is the fifth year that students at MHS have participated in this project that was brought to the attention of the Champions for Change sponsors by a former member that has since graduated.  The club felt the importance of continuing this project.

The project culminated in a 9/11 Community Remembrance Ceremony during halftime of the home varsity football game on September 12, 2025.  Veterans, active-duty military, first responders, people that lost loved ones on or as a result of 9/11 and groups involved in this project were on the field for this event.  The Marathon Coast Guard Color Guard presented the colors, MHS eighth grader Sutton Sayer sang the National Anthem, and Band Director Paul Anderson, MHS eighth grader Roxan Rodriguez, and Ed Ballenger from the American Legion played Taps following a moment of silence.
