The goal of Red Ribbon Week is to present a visible commitment to living a safe, healthy, and drug-free life.  The campaign was designed to create awareness concerning the problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs and to support the decision to live a drug-free lifestyle.  This year’s Red Ribbon Week celebration theme is celebrate life, live drug free!

Red Ribbon Week was started in response to the death of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrigue “Kiki” Camarena who in 1985 was brutally tortured and murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating in Mexico.  Angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing red ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America.

This year, MHS celebrated Red Ribbon Week by hosting a dress up spirit week, a school wide assembly that included a proclamation given by City of Marathon Officials and DEA Special Agent Oscar Negron, and a RRW Fall Family Festival that featured DEA’s Hidden in Plain Sight for parents and a dance and other activities for students.
