Children Visits Florida International University

Gina
Hipson, TSIC Student Advocate, and Meredith A. Cline, Upper Keys Mentor
Coordinator, took twenty Coral Shores and Marathon High School Take Stock In
Children scholars and three MHS mentors (David Kirwan, Marlisa Clohecy, Lynn
Goodwin) to tour the Florida International University (FIU) campus in Miami
on December 2, 2004. The Monroe County Education Foundation sponsored this
field trip for these twenty 11th and 12th grade scholarship recipients. For
many, it was their first experience being on a college campus. Students
toured the campus, classrooms, library, dorms, admission offices and
cafeteria/student union. Lunch was sponsored for all by Thivo and Cole
Foster, TSIC donors.
Two Marathon High/TSIC 2004 graduates (Sabrina Hoffman and Destin Bayer) who
are attending FIU and living on campus met with the group to answer
questions and provide information about campus life.

Take Stock In Children Scholarships Awarded - November 2004 |
The Monroe
County Education Foundation's Take Stock In Children Program awarded 27
scholarships this week to qualified 7th grade students in Monroe County
Schools. There are now 250 students in Monroe County Schools, in grades
7 thru 12, with Take Stock scholarships. Each of these students will be
provided with four years of college tuition to a Florida college upon
graduation and the honoring of their contract. The contract requires
the students to maintain high grades, attend school regularly, follow
the code of student conduct and remain crime and drug free. Each
student has a volunteer community mentor who meets
with them each week
during the school year to provide support, guidance and encouragement to
follow their contract and succeed at the highest level. If you are
interested in learning more about this wonderful program, call Steve
Bear, Program Coordinator @ 293-1546 or Gina Hipson, Student Advocate @
289-1718.

39 Seventh Grade Recipients
in Take Stock |
|
|
The
Monroe County Education Foundation, in partnership with
the District School Board, celebrated the signing of 39
new 7th grade scholarship recipients at five district
schools during the past week.
 | |
|

During the
second week of September, 218 Take Stock In Children
scholarship recipients from seven of our District’s schools
met with their mentors to begin the 2003-04 school year.
Students and their mentors met to catch up on summer events
and schedule their weekly meetings. The Take Stock staff
welcomed the community volunteers and thanked them for their
commitment and support. The staff also reviewed the
student’s contract requirements to pass all course work,
follow the code of student conduct, attend school regularly,
remain crime and drug free and meet with their mentor each
week at the scheduled time. In May 2004, the Monroe County
Take Stock Program will celebrate its largest graduating
class of scholarship recipients. Twenty-nine (29) seniors
will receive their scholarships, which provides them with
two years at any one of the state community colleges,
followed by two years at any one of the state colleges or
university’s, with 100% tuition paid. The program is now in
the process of reviewing the applications for the incoming
group of 7th graders, who will sign their
contracts in November. Each student must have a mentor at
the time of contract signing. If anyone is interested in
becoming a mentor or learning more about the Take Stock In
Children Program, please call
Steve Bear, Program Coordinator, 293-1546,
Gina Roche, Student Advocate, 289-1718 or
Kathryn Fraider, Mentor Coordinator,293-1544.
