Grade Requirements
Standard Diploma and Certificate of Completion

Updated 8/14/2001

Students in the Monroe County Public Schools may pursue a standard diploma or a certificate of completion. Students in the Exceptional Student Education Program are given the opportunity to meet the requirements for a standard diploma or special diploma.

Standard Diploma

To receive a standard high school diploma from the Monroe County Public Schools, students must earn a 2.0 grade point average on the four-point system, earn a passing score on the High School Competency Test and complete all core requirements with a passing grade.

In order to receive credit towards high school graduation, students must demonstrate mastery of performance standards adopted by the Board for each academic course in grades 9 through 12 for which credit toward graduation is awarded. A set of performance standards has been adopted by the Board and is available for review in the District's Curriculum and Instruction Office and at the District's high schools. Mastery of these performance standards may be evaluated by the teacher of the course through standardized tests or other testing, performance on examinations of classroom assignments, teacher observation or other valid means of alternative assessment. Each semester of a year long course stands alone with 1/2 credit awarded for a passing grade. A full credit can be earned for a course only if a passing grade is earned in each semester. Credit for a course will be granted only if a student's mastery of the course's performance standards is demonstrated. Credits may be awarded through course modifications and performance based diploma options as outlined in the Monroe County Comprehensive Dropout Prevention Plan.

Core requirements for all students:

Mathematics 4   Science 4
Social Studies 4   Physical Education 1
English 4   Life Mgt. Skills .5
Fine Arts .5   Practical Arts .5

Social Studies will include American History, World History, Contemporary History, Economics, American Government (to include the study of Florida government, the State Constitution, three branches of state, municipal and county government), and Law Studies.

One of the four credits in Science must be environmental science, one must be biological science and one must be physics or chemistry.

Electives: The total number of elective credits available depend upon the total credits needed for graduation. If a school is on a six, seven or eight period schedule, the electives available would be six, ten or fourteen.

Students who do not meet either the High School Competency Test requirement or the 2.0 cumulative grade point average requirement for a regular diploma will receive a certificate of completion. However, any student who is otherwise entitled to a certificate of completion may elect to remain in the secondary school for up to one additional year and receive special instruction designed to remedy his or her identified deficiencies.
