Sigsbee Parents Choose Charter Conversion |
||
With the scheduled closing of Sigsbee Elementary School at the end of the 2008-2009 school year, 64% of the parents turned out to vote on the future of the school as a charter school. The results indicate that 94% of the parents voting are in favor of converting Sigsbee School into a charter school.

Three History Teachers Honored |

Superintendent Randy Acevedo announced that three Monroe County teachers have been selected as “Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year” for the 2007-2008 school year by the Florida Council for the Social Studies (FCSS). Each year FCSS recognizes teachers from all Florida counties at three levels---elementary, middle, and high school. Nancy Ramsdorf (Plantation Key Elementary School), Katie Balazs (Marathon Middle School) and Nora Laubenstein (Key West High School) will be honored by FCSS at their annual conference in October in St. Petersburg, Florida, October 23-26, 2008. |

The Transition to Independence, Employment and Success TIES program sees three original adult students with disabilities graduate and take on new careers. “Through extensive community based work experience situations and assessments Dan, William and Kenny were offered expanded opportunities that the traditional high school courses of study do not offer,” said TIES Director Ruth Holland. |

Florida Campaign Encourages Wearing Life Jackets |
||
During National Safe Boating Week in Florida, Governor Charlie Crist and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) encourage boaters to wear a life jacket. The FWC reported 77 boating fatalities for 2007; however, following a few simple rules and paying attention while boating can make the difference between a safe and enjoyable day on the water and one that ends tragically. Statistics repeatedly show that boaters who have taken a basic boating safety class are also less likely to be involved in a boating accident. K-8 Math Teachers Revise Pacing Guides |

The number of math concepts for grades K–8 has been significantly reduced. The purpose behind this is to allow K–8 teachers more time to teach mathematical concepts in depth and to mastery rather than quickly "covering" concepts. |

Five Monroe County American history teachers have been accepted into the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History’s summer seminar program for 2008. All five are participants in the district’s Teaching American History (TAH) grant program. Marianne Esposito, Sugarloaf School , will be attending Yale; Eric Nelson and Kari Hjerpe, both at HOB, and Jane McGill, KWHS, will be attending Harvard, and Anne Murphy, KWHS will attend Columbia. |

Students will travel to ten different countries and live with host families for three to five weeks. Take Stock in Children is Florida's premiere mentoring and scholarship program for low-income students providing four year, fully paid college tuition scholarships. |

Math Day to Focus on Financial Literacy |

The Florida Department of Education Office of Math and Science will recognize its first-ever Math Day on May 1. On this day, every school in the state is invited to teach a specific mathematics lesson relating to financial literacy. The Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FCTM) and Florida Association of Mathematics Supervisors (FAMS), in support of Florida Math Day will also be offering an award to the writers of each of the four selected lessons for implementation. |

Marathon High Wins State Lifesmart Championship |

A five-member team from Marathon High has won the State LifeSmarts Championship held at the Florida State Fair in Tampa. Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson congratulated the team and awarded a check for $4,400 to be used to defray travel expenses when the team vies for the national LifeSmarts title in Minneapolis in April. Kathy Loggie from Marathon High School served as the team’s coach. Team members included Michael Koppel, Elizabeth Pape, Gabriela Hernandez, Andrew Vassil and James Joseph.

In addition, the annual Statewide Tornado Drill will take place Feb. 6, 2008, from 10-10:30 a.m.

Florida’s graduation rate jumped from 71 percent in 2005-2006 to 72.4 percent in 2006-2007-- a 1.4 percent increase for the state. Monroe County School District’s graduation rate jumped 8.1 percent from 75.5 percent to 83.6 percent for the same period. Superintendent Acevedo said, “We have experienced great success and for that I am very proud, but we must all keep in mind student success is a journey not a destination. Four years ago we ranked 34th in the state in the graduation rate, and now we are ninth.” |

The Kids Theater of the Upper Keys and the Education Coalition for Monroe County (ECMC) is happy to be presenting the popular junior production of “Annie”. “Annie” is a fun musical directed by Michele Zofchak, a PKS Middle School Teacher, who directed other smash hits in the Upper Keys – “Give my Regards to Broadway” and “Yearbook Reflections”. There will be three performances in the CSHS Performing Arts Center on February 28, 29, and March 1st. | Budget Cuts Create Urgency to Close Key West School | ||
The School Administration faces pending significant budget cuts for the 2008-2009 school year, forcing the Board to move forward with a decision to close a school in Key West. The loss of funding stems from a combination of sources, including a revenue shortfall from state funds, a roll back through the constitutional amendment leading to a loss of resources, a decline in local property values, and a reduction of funds for school operating costs.

| Stockings for the Troops | ||
December 7 is the day many remember veterans killed or injured at Pearl Harbor in 1941. This year it’s also the last day to remember U.S. soldiers now serving overseas with “Stockings for the Troops.” For a $10 donation the American Red Cross ships a camouflage stocking to a soldier, stuffed with a phone card, socks, toiletries, and candy. Monroe County Schools Adult Education Department has been awarded an Adult Education and Family Literacy, Adult General Education Competitive Grant. Award amount is $110,550 for the 2007-2008 school year. Using these funds, Monroe County School District will provide adult education and literacy services to assist adults in the skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency. In addition, adults who are parents will receive assistance in obtaining educational skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children. |

Thanks to an Eckerd Family Foundation Grant, the school district has designed an extensive science outreach in partnership with the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Gardens, to increase science literacy and help students improve FCAT scores. More than 1,550 students are scheduled to experience a three-part program which includes two class sessions and one on-site visit.

The Monroe Youth Challenge Program recently hosted five successful Challenge Days, two at Coral Shores, one in Marathon and two in Key West. In addition to the founders coming, the two other Challenge Day leaders were Jennifer Wilson and Khayree Shaheed. Monroe Youth Challenge Program has increased its outreach since inception in 2000, from 700 youth to more than 8000 youth.

For the last four years Coral Shores has seen an upward trend in its Advanced Placement (AP) scores due in large part to, “a very impressive school improvement plan that had goals for AP,” said Superintendent Randy Acevedo. According to research done by the College Board who administers the test, students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely than their peers to complete a bachelor’s degree in four years or less. Coral Shores High School (CSHS) outranks the national mean average in four out of the six AP courses it offered. |

Superintendent Randy Acevedo has announced that the Florida Department of Education recently recognized the Monroe County School District as a top district in the state for the inclusion practices and student achievement. Inclusion is a term used to describe students with disabilities being included into “regular” classrooms.

Randy Acevedo, Superintendent of Schools, has announced that school grades have been posted by the Department of Education. Seven schools received an "A", five schools a "B" and one school received a "C". Key West High and Glynn Archer Elementary are commended for going up a letter grade and it is noted the Coral Shores High had enough points for a B, but, was penalized for not showing enough growth in one area. |

Superintendent Randy Acevedo has announced a $300,000. Response to Intervention Research Grant (RTI) from the US Department of Education. The Student Services and Reading Department filed a joint application for the three-year grant to implement new strategies to improve student skills. |

| PKS Students Honored by Red Cross | ||
Plantation Key Middle School (PKS) students were honored by the American Red Cross Measles Initiative as “Advocates of the Month” for June with a full article on their web site and in their international newsletters. The seventh and eighth-grade students wrote and illustrated an original, full-color children’s book entitled “Have No Fear Walk with Me.” Proceeds from the sale of the book and other campaign efforts raised $1,500 – enough to save 1,500 lives. |

In a partnership with the Monroe County School District, The Cultural American Music Program debuts a new track for non-music students. CAMP, which kicked off June 14, now offers seventh- to 12th graders the opportunity to learn about culinary arts, hospitality management, tourism and video production.

Kindergarten-8th Grade Math teachers worked May 15-16 on revising and updating the K-8 Math Pacing Guides to include the new state standards, under the direction of Serge Sanchez, Math Program Specialist.
For the second year in a row, Newsweek ranks Key West High School in the top 5% of all U.S. schools. According to an announcement from Newsweek, Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews.



Mallory Weeks was recently presented the
Plantation Key School proudly announces Natalie Davidson, from Mrs. Donna Roberts’ classroom, has won an essay contest sponsored by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Her essay was selected out of all participating fifth grade students from District #5 which covers Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties.

Ten teams of fifth graders participated in the First Annual Math and Science Bowl, sponsored by the Keys Council for Math and Science Educators. Stanley Switlik’s Team 2 took first place in the bowl, with team members Aaron Grube, Kody Sparks, and Jaasiel Baccallao taking home medals and a trophy for their school.
Working collaboratively with the Monroe County Courts and the Monroe County Bar Association, Monroe County Schools will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Law Day with a series of activities that began on May 1st, 2008. More than 80 of Florida’s top business partners were honored by Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith at the 21st Annual Commissioner’s Business Recognition Awards ceremony. For the Monroe County School District, Sigsbee Elementary School Business Partner Naval Air Station Key West was recognized. Commander Michael Kutyba and his wife represented Monroe County at this event. A parade of classes carrying banners and wearing hats and other shark clothing paraded before the County Commissioners and Members of the Monroe County School Board today for the Grand Opening of Sugarloaf’s Fields. The Cheerleaders, both elementary and middle school performed a thank you cheer. The band and the hand bell choir also played. Karen Sharp, president of First State Bank formally pledged the bank’s support in purchasing scoreboards for the fields.

Since the PACE Center closure announcement March 10, Monroe County School District Superintendent Randy Acevedo and Florida Keys Community College President Dr. Jill Landesberg-Boyle, with the help of MCSD Program Specialist Carol Eisenman and other staff, have come up with an agreement to start a new program at FKCC.
Now in its 6th year, the Educational Coalition for Monroe County, in collaboration with Monroe County School District and Florida Keys Community College presents the Cultural American Music Program (CAMP) & Careers 2008. CAMP is a day program in the Middle Keys that offers professional instruction and performance opportunities to students in Monroe County.

Key West High School was crowned district champion on Monday, January 28th in the Superintendent’s Academic Challenge held at the Marathon Government Center. The Academic Challenge is a highly academic high school tournament in which teams of six members (a maximum of four players during each of the three rounds and two alternates) attempt to answer challenging questions from the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, the fine arts, world languages (French and Spanish), the humanities and technology.
While cities across the nation have seen public safety agencies and school officials pull together after a shooting or accident affecting a school, Monroe County officials have pulled together ahead of time. In a full-day workshop held Jan. 15 Monroe County Safe School Coordinator Sunny Booker brought more than 40 county-wide school and emergency-related officials together to review and improve the school system’s crisis plan.

The show opens Thursday, Jan. 24th and runs through Saturday the 26th at Key West High School auditorium. This updated version is a Keys Kids production directed by Cameron Murray and double-cast starring many familiar high school stars and a few new performers. The Coral Shores High School student newspaper, the Hurricane Watch, and the yearbook, the Reef, have won First Place from the American Scholastic Press Association. This award marks the fourth consecutive First Place award to both publications by the ASPA which judges on design, writing, editing and content.

130 culinary students from Key West High, Marathon High, and Coral Shores High attended the 2nd Annual Ocean Reef Culinary & Hospitality field trip. The staff at Ocean Reef shared numerous career paths in culinary and hospitality and offered their real “life experiences”. The group toured several culinary locations at Ocean Reef to see what happens behind the scenes. The day ended with 10 Ocean Reef chefs entertaining questions from students and teachers.
Morgan Beaton, Plantation Key School, has been selected to represent the Monroe County School District in the Middle School State Honor Band. Kara Wiecjorek and Leo Molina, Coral Shores High School, and Ricardo Dominguez, Marathon High School, were selected for the High School State Honor Band. They will perform in Tampa on January 12th at the 2008 Florida Music Educator’s Conference.
Several students in the Practical Academic Cultural Education program at Marathon High created a recycling awareness program in Spanish to share with students at Stanley Switlik Elementary and the public. The project was made possible by a Florida Learn and Serve grant that requires students to meet educational standards and provide a service to the community to earn their grade. Teacher Teresa Thorne and Outreach Coordinator Rebecca Winter oversaw the project.
An anonymous donor has made a $100,000 contribution to the Ocean Reef Foundation. At the request of this donor, these funds were to be transferred to the Monroe County Education Foundation and used to purchase scholarships for the Take Stock In Children program.

Fire rescue was called to Marathon High School around 12:30 Sunday, Oct. 28 for a fire in the auditorium. The facility was under construction. All damage was contained to the second floor in a small room that served as a temporary office for the electrical contractor. No one was hurt. The fire was first reported by Heery Construction personnel who were working on the school property and called 9-1-1. According to Marathon Fire Chief Dale Beaver, smoke was coming from the roof on the southeast corner and heavy smoke came from a door. Fire rescue from Conch Key, Layton and Marathon responded to the call.

The KWH students involved aspire to work with children when they get older. However, some just want to learn how to be the best parent they can be. Topics included are the different types of parenting styles, pregnancy/birth, caring for children, guiding and communicating with children, and meeting family responsibilities. The students are currently interning at Poinciana, and will be switching schools in the spring so the students can be exposed to as many different classrooms, teachers, and students as possible. The staff has also implemented the Ready-or-Not Tot program this year.
Monroe County School District health career students from each high school recently toured Miami medical facilities to learn more about career opportunities.
Six schools in Monroe County will become community learning centers offering academic, artistic, and cultural enrichment opportunities to students and their families when school is not in session. These programs are designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program. An important school supply—perhaps the most important supply of all—is a public library card for all school-age children.
The First Child’s Safety Awareness Day held at Bayview Park Saturday, August 25, had about 500 people in attendance. “This free, family event was fun-filled and may very well save lives,” said Superintendent Randy Acevedo who partnered Monroe County School District with the Dade Lodge #14 of Free & Accepted Masons in Key West to develop Child’s Safety Awareness Day.
