FCAT shows Increased Student Achievement

FCATThe Department of Education has published a summary, with statewide scores and comparisons. The district's Office of Assessment and Accountability has released the following information:

The FCAT Parent Network site allows parents to see their child's Sunshine State Standards (SSS) FCAT scores in Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Writing as soon as they are available. The information provided, as well as additional details found at the FCAT website (http://fcat.fldoe.org), can help you understand your student’s results.


"Take Stock in Children" Graduates Honored

Take Stock
On Saturday, May 31st Florida Representative Ray Sansom and FKCC's President Dr. Jill Landesberg-Boyle joined Take Stock dignitaries in participating in Monroe's eighth Take Stock In Children Graduation Ceremony, held at the new Marathon High School.  A full house attended  this ceremony, honoring the 45 Take Stock graduates from all three high schools.

Office of Assessment Releases Climate Survey Data

Each year, the Monroe County School District conducts a survey of students, parents, and school faculty/staff members. The purpose of this survey is to gather information on whether the district and schools are meeting the goals and objectives that are most important to providing students with a quality education in a safe and secure learning environment. Cultural American Music Program Debuts New Track

CAMPIn a partnership with the Monroe County School District, The Cultural American Music Program debuts a new track for non-music students. CAMP, which kicked off June 14, now offers seventh- to 12th graders the opportunity to learn about culinary arts, hospitality management, tourism and video production.

Sigsbee Parents Choose Charter Conversion

With the scheduled closing of Sigsbee Elementary School at the end of the 2008-2009 school year, 64% of the parents turned out to vote on the future of the school as a charter school. The results indicate that 94% of the parents voting are in favor of converting Sigsbee School into a charter school.

Three History Teachers Honored

Superintendent Randy Acevedo announced that three Monroe County teachers have been selected as “Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year” for the 2007-2008 school year by the Florida Council for the Social Studies (FCSS). Each year FCSS recognizes teachers from all Florida counties at three levels---elementary, middle, and high school. Nancy Ramsdorf (Plantation Key Elementary School), Katie Balazs (Marathon Middle School) and Nora Laubenstein (Key West High School) will be honored by FCSS at their annual conference in October in St. Petersburg, Florida, October 23-26, 2008.

Adults with Disabilities Graduate to Careers

The Transition to Independence, Employment and Success TIES program sees three original adult students with disabilities graduate and take on new careers. “Through extensive community based work experience situations and assessments Dan, William and Kenny were offered expanded opportunities that the traditional high school courses of study do not offer,” said TIES Director Ruth Holland.

Florida Campaign Encourages Wearing Life Jackets

During National Safe Boating Week in Florida, Governor Charlie Crist and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) encourage boaters to wear a life jacket. The FWC reported 77 boating fatalities for 2007; however, following a few simple rules and paying attention while boating can make the difference between a safe and enjoyable day on the water and one that ends tragically. Statistics repeatedly show that boaters who have taken a basic boating safety class are also less likely to be involved in a boating accident. K-8 Math Teachers Revise Pacing Guides

MathKindergarten-8th Grade Math teachers worked May 15-16 on revising and updating the K-8 Math Pacing Guides to  include the new state standards,  under the direction of Serge Sanchez, Math Program Specialist.

The number of math concepts for grades K–8 has been significantly reduced. The purpose behind this is to allow K–8 teachers more time to teach mathematical concepts in depth and to mastery rather than quickly "covering" concepts.


Newsweek Ranks Key West High in Top 5%

WelshFor the second year in a row, Newsweek ranks Key West High School in the top 5% of all U.S. schools. According to an announcement from Newsweek, Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews.

Superintendent Randy Acevedo said, “Mr. Welsh and all the teachers at Key West High School have put out tremendous effort so our students can compete in the world market.”

KWHS Principal John Welsh said, “Being ranked in the top 5% shows me our students, with the help of their teachers and administrators, are doing a great job.”

Middle School Academic Challenge Results

HOB WinnersFor the third consecutive year Horace O’Bryant Middle School was crowned district champion in the Superintendent’s Middle School Academic Challenge held at the Marathon Government Center. The Academic Challenge is a highly academic middle school tournament in which teams of six members (a maximum of four players during each of the three rounds and two alternates) attempt to answer challenging questions from the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and technology. (Click on picture to enlarge)


Truman Symposium Essay Contest Winners Announced

PKSNine Monroe County students were honored at the Harry Truman Little White House Symposium, held at Beachside Resort and Conference Center.  They placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in elementary, middle school and high school categories for the “Becoming a Citizen” Oral History/Essay Contest sponsored by the Atlanta branch of the NARA (National Archives and Records Administration).  Pictured from PKS: Mrs. Kim Browning, middle school teacher, Rashedul, Vanessa Strickland, principal, Noel, Nancy Ramsdorf, 5th grade teacher, and Rachel.

Utility Board Recognizes Calendar Art Contest Winners

ArtistsKeys Energy Services (KEYS) recently sponsored an Energy Conservation Art Contest for all elementary school students in the Lower Florida Keys. One overall winner and two winners from each grade level were selected to grace the pages of the KEYS Energy Conservation calendar.

The overall winner was Arnold B. Kravitz, a Fifth Grader from Glynn Archer Elementary school. His artwork will be featured on the cover of KEYS’ award-winning 2008-2009 calendar.

Congressional Medal of Merit Winner Recognized

WeeksMallory Weeks was recently presented the Congressional Medal of Merit by Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

She was selected for this award for demonstrating excellence in school citizenship, community service, peer respect and academic excellence.

PKS Student Wins Essay Contest

PKSPlantation Key School proudly announces Natalie Davidson, from Mrs. Donna Roberts’ classroom, has won an essay contest sponsored by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.  Her essay was selected out of all participating fifth grade students from District #5 which covers Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties.

FCAT Writing Scores Announced

FCATThe Office of Accountability and Assessment has completed an executive summary of the district's FCAT Writing Scores and has prepared a comparison of the scores from the year 2004 to 2008, posting the information on the department's webpage. Three elementary schools showed an increase in their average score. All five middle schools either showed an increase or maintained their average combined score. All three high schools either maintained or displayed an increase in average combined score when compared to those from 2007.

Parents may view their students’ scores via the FCAT Parent Network using the secure login and password provided by the school. More information includes: 2008 FCAT Writing+ fact sheet , Interactive Search by School and District

The content of each “Count on Me” show is produced to reach students with a positive, powerful message about responsibility. Each student was challenged and motivated to be responsible for themselves, others and the world.

Opportunity, fun, and challenge!  This describes the 8TP or eighth-grade transition programs that took place at all three Monroe County public high schools. These 8TPs were designed by students for students through the sponsorship and leadership of Monroe Youth Challenge Program to reduce school violence.

Horace O’ Bryant Middle School’s Relay For Life team has raised $15,193.15 for the American Cancer Society. This year’s Relay theme was “Let’s Make Cancer a Game We Can Win,” with each team representing a different game.

First Annual Math and Science Bowl

Math BowlTen teams of fifth graders participated in the First Annual Math and Science Bowl, sponsored by the Keys Council for Math and Science Educators. Stanley Switlik’s Team 2 took first place in the bowl, with team members Aaron Grube, Kody Sparks, and Jaasiel Baccallao taking home medals and a trophy for their school.

Announcement for Parents of Students in Exceptional Student Education (ESE)

How well is your School Supporting your Involvement in Your Child’s Education? The Florida Department of Education is conducting a survey to provide the state with information on how well the schools are supporting parents’ involvement in their child’s education. Parents will receive the survey by mail in early May. You have a choice of completing the paper survey or going online to complete the survey.  All responses are confidential. Parents are encouraged to take part in this unique opportunity to be heard by completing and returning the survey no later than May 31, 2008. Florida DOE Provides Online Tutoring for Students

Florida Tutor Network is a Web site developed by the Florida Department of Education for students, parents, and mentors. Florida Tutor Network provides online tutoring in reading/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students, parents, and librarian users may create an account from the website.


Algebra Students Celebrate Florida Math Day

5th Grade Elementary Track Meet Re-Scheduled

The 5th Grade Elementary Track Meet has officially been re-scheduled for May 31. Starting time is 9:00 A.M. at the Key West High School Track.

Law Day Celebrated in Monroe County

Working collaboratively with the Monroe County Courts and the Monroe County Bar Association, Monroe County Schools will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Law Day  with a series of activities that began on May 1st, 2008. 5 Monroe County Teachers Accepted into Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminars

Five Monroe County American history teachers have been accepted into the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History’s summer seminar program for 2008. All five are participants in the district’s Teaching American History (TAH) grant program.   Marianne Esposito, Sugarloaf School , will be attending Yale;  Eric Nelson and Kari Hjerpe, both at HOB, and Jane McGill, KWHS, will be attending Harvard, and Anne Murphy, KWHS will attend Columbia.

Navy Recognized as Outstanding Business Partner

NavyMore than 80 of Florida’s top business partners were honored by Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith at the 21st Annual Commissioner’s Business Recognition Awards ceremony. For the Monroe County School District, Sigsbee Elementary School Business Partner Naval Air Station Key West was recognized. Commander Michael Kutyba and his wife represented Monroe County at this event. Pictured: Navy Master at Arms First Class Garcia (at left) and Pavlich stand with Leslie Crabbs, the Sigsbee Parent Teacher Organization president,  at the school’s Fall Festival, where Navy volunteers are heavily relied on.

Eleven Take Stock in Children Students will Study Abroad

Grants for study abroad have been awarded to eleven Take Stock in Children students from Monroe County. Students will travel to ten different countries and live with host families for three to five weeks. Take Stock in Children is Florida's premiere mentoring and scholarship program for low-income students providing four year, fully paid college tuition scholarships.

Student Awareness Day Changes Attitudes

CSH LeadershipMore than 100 high school students from Monroe County public and private schools attended a one-day event hosted by the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, as a living memorial through education.  The experience was made possible by Monroe Youth Challenge Program and a donation toward transportation from the Keys Jewish Community Center. Middle Keys Staff and Students Recognized at Board Meeting

Those recognized at the April 22nd Board Meeting were: MHS Girls Tennis Team with the highest Team GPA of 3.589, Katie Greenman, 2007-2008 District Youth Volunteer of the Year, students that received the Congressional Medal of Merit presented by Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Letinen at a recent recognition ceremony, MHS and Switlik – Recipients of The Five Star School Award, Jaclyn Clairmont, 4th grade student recognized by the Disabled American Veterans for her Patriotic Essay. Suzanne Terpos for her leadership at the Veteran's Red White and Blue Day. Tami Wile's enthusiasm in helping channel dollars to several worthy causes in the Marathon community, Patti Joyce, the designation of National Certified Board Teacher, Christine Smith as the Switlik's Volunteer of the Year, and FKCC student Ryana Frederick as Switlik's Student Volunteer of the Year.

Math Day to Focus on Financial Literacy

The Florida Department of Education Office of Math and Science will recognize its first-ever Math Day on May 1. On this day, every school in the state is invited to teach a specific mathematics lesson relating to financial literacy. The Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FCTM) and Florida Association of Mathematics Supervisors (FAMS), in support of Florida Math Day will also be offering an award to the writers of each of the four selected lessons for implementation.


Plantation Key Odyssey of the Mind Places at State

Plantation Key School has just completed another big year of Odyssey of the Mind competition.  Under the direction of Donna Roberts, PKS had nine teams compete on the Regional level February 23rd and six teams to go on to State level April 5th.  Two of the six teams placed in the top five for their division and problem.

Sugarloaf School Celebrates New Fields

SLS OpeningA parade of classes carrying banners and wearing hats and other shark clothing paraded before the County Commissioners and Members of the Monroe County School Board today for the Grand Opening of Sugarloaf’s Fields.  The Cheerleaders, both elementary and middle school performed a thank you cheer.  The band and the hand bell choir also played.  Karen Sharp, president of First State Bank formally pledged the bank’s support  in purchasing scoreboards for the fields.

Career Day at Stanley Switlik

Chef“If you can’t read the directions or measure the flour, how can you bake a cake?” Chef Green and Glenn Naklicki demonstrated their skills and shared their knowledge and experience with 5th and 6th grade students.  These students will be attending Marathon Middle/High School next year.  They also received a tri-fold brochure of all the Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings and were stressed the importance of reading and math in these programs. (click on picture to enlarge)

TIES Plant Sale a Huge Success!

TIESThe TIES plant sale on Friday, April 14th was a huge success! It was the culmination of a service learning project. The students raised the plants within the School District, City of Key West, and Navy Base offices. Through weekly interior landscaping services, they learned to communicate with customers and met many new people. The customers enjoyed meeting the young people and have reported that their lives were enriched by the relationships they developed.


Key West High Places 4th in Academic Challenge

The Key West High School Academic Challenge Team placed 4th in the state region III competition in Orlando.  This is best any Monroe County Academic Challenge Team has ever done in state competition. Principal John Welsh stated, "I am extremely proud of, (front row) Rhonda Bacher, Sara-Wyn Eppes, Olivia Kent (back row) Carson Neymoss, Noah Kent, Vincent LeNeures and coach Kerri McLean.


Marathon High Announces Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

MHSMarathon High School Principal Harry Russell has announced that April 30th is the date for the school's Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, officially set to open the new school. The event will take place from 5:30 - 7:30 PM in the new auditorium, with Student Government Association students leading Open House tours. The Groundbreaking Ceremony took place on November 10, 2005 and the school has been under construction since that date. (link to Keynoter Article)


2008 Congressional Recognition Ceremony

The following  high school students from Monroe County attended the 2008 Congressional Recognition Ceremony at Southwest Miami Senior High School in Miami:  Mallory Weeks (Coral Shores), Thomas Lowry (Key West) and Kathleen Greenman (Marathon). Each received the Congressional Medal of Merit.

Florida Offender Alert System

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and local law enforcement partners recently unveiled a new addition to the state’s Sexual Offender / Predator Web site – the Florida Offender Alert System.

The system allows you to sign up to receive e-mail alert notifications when a registered sexual offender or predator moves to your neighborhood, or within a radius of any other designated address – all for free. To sign up, go to www.flsexoffender.net.

The Florida Department of Education recently unveiled its new Web site at www.fldoe.org. The redesigned site offers portals for students, educators, administrators and staff, families and communities. To view the site or to offer your comments and feedback, go to www.fldoe.org.


Myriam Bernal Named Florida Fund for Minority Teachers, Inc. - Teacher of the Year

Bernal Annette Martinson, Principal of Key Largo School has announced that Second Grade Teacher Mrs. Myriam Bernal (center) was named the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers - Teacher of the Year.

Founded in 1996, The Florida Fund for Minority Teachers, Inc. has been awarding scholarships to eligible minority students to increase the number of minority teachers in Florida’s public school classrooms.

Going Green - CSH Marine Biology Project Featured

CSH CoralThe Coral Restoration Project, one of the components of the Coral Shores High Marine Biology Program is now featured on Channel One. Ken Nedimyer, Coral Restoration Founder, was featured on NBC Nightly News and Channel One, which is an NBC affiliate, contacted him and asked to do a segment on the program. Jessica Kumari, a Channel One reporter, did the segment as part of a "Going Green" feature.

Service Learning Program Helps PreSchool Children

PlaygroupThanks to a school district mini service learning grant, members of Coral Shores' early childhood class meet with a group of Hispanic mothers and children in Key Largo each week for Grupo de Juego, which means playgroup in Spanish.

MYCP Hosts Annual Awards Celebration May 9

Monroe Youth Challenge Program, a non profit organization that runs programs on every school campus in the county, is to recognize community partners and outstanding student participants Friday, May 9. Clean Audit from State Auditors Announced

KathyDespite more rigorous audit standards, declined enrollment, and an economic downturn, the Monroe County School District received the cleanest bill of health for its fiscal operations since 2002. With a peak of 19 findings on both federal and operating standards in the year ending 2005, the 2007 audit has only five findings. Director of Finance Kathy Reitzel, CPA said, “This was a district effort. All the directors have worked hard to get their department’s procedures in order.” Full story


Lisa Giles Receives "Making a Difference" Award

Lisa GilesLisa Giles, Key Largo School Science Instructor, recently received the "Making a Difference" award, sponsored by the Drug, Chemical and Associated Technology Association (DCAT) at the National Science Teachers Association Conference in Boston. The award was presented by John Whitsett, NSTA President and Pam Tyler, Chair of the Scholarship Committee for DCAT


Keys Schools Jump Rope for American Heart Program

topCoach Gwidt, teacher at Sigsbee,   has announced that Sigsbee set a record high for the Keys and South Florida’s online fundraising for the Rope for Heart Program. This was done througsh the P.E. classes. 


Key West High Juniors Honored by City Commission

MayorCongratulations to the following juniors who were honored by Mayor McPherson at a recent City Commission Meeting:  Academic Achievement - Victoria Brisson and Jace Thompson;  Excellence in the Visual Performing  -  Diana Baucom and David Parker;  and Outstanding Achievement - Kaya Lydamore and Tylor Wilhide.

KWH Ensemble Earns Straight Superiors

KWH
The Key West High School Wind Ensemble earned STRAIGHT SUPERIORS at the Florida Bandmaster’s Association Concert Band Music Performance Assessment.  They were given “A” in all categories for all selections, including sight reading.  This group will be performing at the FBA STATE Music Performance Assessment in April. 


Sigsbee Students Celebrate Pi Day on 3.14

SIG PISigsbee 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students competed to find out who memorized the most digits of Pi.  A King and Queen of Pi from each class was chosen.  Fifth graders Samantha and Collin memorized the most digits of Pi out of all three grade levels. 

Samantha memorized 173 digits and Collin memorized 86!  They were the Ultimate Queen and King of Pi.  All kings and queens were rewarded with a piece of pie as well as a chance to pie one of their teachers.  Serge Sanchez, MCSD Math Program Specialist, was on site to congratulate the participants.

Florida Digital Educator Institute Announced

Monroe County School District will host a four day Teaching and Learning Institute, sponsored by the Florida Digital Educator Program (FDEP), and administered by administered by the Florida Center for Instructional Technology (FCIT). The institute, which is one of many state-wide, will be at Poinciana Elementary from June 24-27. Scholarships are available to help with registration costs.

CAMP is a day program in the Middle Keys that offers professional instruction and performance opportunities to students in Monroe County.

Plantation Key Students Jump to Raise over $4,000

PKSPlantation Key School raised an impressive $4,356.41 for the American Heart Association last week by participating in the PKSJump Rope for Heart program through P.E. classes.  Pictured with P.E. Key West ESOL Class Makes Donation to KWH ESOL Lab

Teachers Complete Technology Training

MathA cadre of Monroe County high school math and science teachers has completed an intensive program of study to assist them with technology integration in their classrooms.  

Select teachers have engaged in nine days of training to learn how Texas Instruments (TI) graphing calculators, TI Navigators, and scientific probes and sensors can be used to bring real-world lessons and engaging activities to their students.  Each participating teacher has received TI graphing calculators, TI Navigators and appropriate probes and sensors for classroom use with students. Full story

Key West Senior wins State Championship Title

Ralph Ralph Major finished his high school wrestling career with a State Championship title and a perfect 33-0 season.  He wrestles in the 189 pound division and he has been to the state level for three years, finally capturing first place in his senior year.

Key West Adult ESOL Class Visits Library

On Friday February 22, 2008 the Key West Adult Education ESOL class took a field trip to the Key West Library. Adult Education instructor Rodziah Josephson, along with library staff, was able to introduce students to the library system and assist all students in applying for a library card.

Marathon High Wins State Lifesmart Championship

A five-member team from Marathon High has won the State LifeSmarts Championship held at the Florida State Fair in Tampa. Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson congratulated the team and awarded a check for $4,400 to be used to defray travel expenses when the team vies for the national LifeSmarts title in Minneapolis in April. Kathy Loggie from Marathon High School served as the team’s coach.  Team members included Michael Koppel, Elizabeth Pape, Gabriela Hernandez, Andrew Vassil and James Joseph.

Florida Supreme Court Justice Visits Monroe County

JusticeJustice Peggy Quince, visiting Monroe County Schools, is presented with the Superintendent’s “Student Success, Whatever It Takes” Award following the Q/A session with 5th grade students, Anthony Henriquez (Poinciana) and Kencia Petithomme (Gerald Adams). 5th grade students from throughout the Keys submitted questions to be posed to Justice Quince. All-County Band Festival a Huge Success

The Monroe All-County Band Festival took place February 1st - 2nd at the Key West High School Performing Arts Center.  Students from all Monroe County band programs formed one middle and one high school band.  The students worked extremely hard over two day period and performed an outstanding concert for the public.

Superintendent's Academic Challenge Results

Academic chKey West High School was crowned district champion on Monday, January 28th in the Superintendent’s Academic Challenge held at the Marathon Government Center.  The Academic Challenge is a highly academic high school tournament in which teams of six members (a maximum of four players during each of the three rounds and two alternates) attempt to answer challenging questions from the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, the fine arts, world languages (French and Spanish), the humanities and technology.

Schools Focus on Homeland Security

While cities across the nation have seen public safety agencies and school officials pull together after a shooting or accident affecting a school, Monroe County officials have pulled together ahead of time. In a full-day workshop held Jan. 15 Monroe County Safe School Coordinator Sunny Booker brought more than 40 county-wide school and emergency-related officials together to review and improve the school system’s crisis plan.

Oscar and Felix - A new Look at the Odd Couple

PlayIf you like the original Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple”, you’ll split your sides with his newest version of this comedy classic “Oscar and Felix – a new look at THE ODD COUPLE”.  The show opens Thursday, Jan. 24th and runs through Saturday the 26th at Key West High School auditorium.  This updated version is a Keys Kids production directed by Cameron Murray and double-cast starring many familiar high school stars and a few new performers.  The show runs Thursday – Saturday at 7:30 with a 2:00 matinee on Saturday.  Ticket prices start at $10 for students and senior citizens, $12 for adults, and a family ticket for $25.00.   Tickets can be purchased at Mac Arthur Music or one hour prior to curtain.  For information call 509-1370 or nora.revelin@keysschools.com

Hazardous Weather Week - Essay Contest Announced
Florida's annual Hazardous Weather Awareness Week will take place Feb. 2-9, 2008. The week's activities include the announcement of the winners of the statewide essay contest for high school students conducted by the Department of Education's Just Read, Florida! office in partnership with the Division of Emergency Management. In addition, the annual Statewide Tornado Drill will take place Feb. 6, 2008, from 10-10:30 a.m.

Ocean Reef Culinary & Hospitality Event

Ocean Reef130 culinary students from Key West High, Marathon High, and Coral Shores High attended the 2nd Annual Ocean Reef Culinary & Hospitality field trip.  The staff at Ocean Reef shared  numerous career paths in culinary and hospitality and offered their real “life experiences”.  The group toured several culinary locations at Ocean Reef to see what happens behind the scenes. The day ended with 10 Ocean Reef chefs entertaining questions from  students and teachers.

Florida’s graduation rate jumped from 71 percent in 2005-2006 to 72.4 percent in 2006-2007-- a 1.4 percent increase for the state. Monroe County School District’s graduation rate jumped 8.1 percent from 75.5 percent to 83.6 percent for the same period. Superintendent Acevedo said, “We have experienced great success and for that I am very proud, but we must all keep in mind student success is a journey not a destination. Four years ago we ranked 34th in the state in the graduation rate, and now we are ninth.”

Headstart Audit Shows Near Perfect Score  

Angela WhiddenMichael Henriquez, Monroe County School District Executive Director, announced the Head Start audit showed a near-perfect score over the last audit done three years ago. This year Monroe County proved compliant in all 10 areas, with only 5 standards marked in need of improvement. “That’s near perfect -- a very dramatic improvement. We’re proud of the hard work Program Director Angela Whidden and the entire Head Start Team has put into the program,” Henriquez said.

First State Bank Donates to Sugarloaf Classrooms

SLSJason O’Brien, Branch Manager of the Sugarloaf Office of First State Bank, recently donated $100 each to five classrooms at Sugarloaf School. He is pictured here delivering the checks to Principal Terri Axford.   Staff at the bank made personal contributions and used other fundraising strategies to collect the money.  The Sugarloaf School Advisory Council has 100% of all classrooms fully sponsored as their goal this year.


Kids Theater To Perform - Auditions Scheduled

The Kids Theater of the Upper Keys and the Education Coalition for Monroe County (ECMC) is happy to be presenting the popular junior production of “Annie”.  “Annie” is a fun musical directed by Michele Zofchak, a PKS Middle School Teacher, who directed other smash hits in the Upper Keys – “Give my Regards to Broadway” and “Yearbook Reflections”.  There will be three performances in the CSHS Performing Arts Center on February 28, 29, and March 1st.

Budget Cuts Create Urgency to Close Key West School

The School Administration faces pending significant budget cuts for the 2008-2009 school year, forcing the Board to move forward with a decision to close a school in Key West. The loss of funding stems from a combination of sources, including a revenue shortfall from state funds, a roll back through the constitutional amendment leading to a loss of resources, a decline in local property values, and a reduction of funds for school operating costs.

Stockings for the Troops

December 7 is the day many remember veterans killed or injured at Pearl Harbor in 1941. This year it’s also the last day to remember U.S. soldiers now serving overseas with “Stockings for the Troops.” For a $10 donation the American Red Cross ships a camouflage stocking to a soldier, stuffed with a phone card, socks, toiletries, and candy. To purchase a stocking before Dec. 7 contact Grace Connors, Branch Office Coordinator, American Red Cross of Greater Miami & The Keys, at 92330 Overseas Highway, Suite 104 in Tavernier or call (305) 852-9612. This is a student leadership project of Monroe Youth Challenge Program. So far students have raised nearly $3,000.


School Board Elects Steven Pribramsky Chairman

Board chairDuring their organizational meeting on November 20, the Monroe County School Board elected Steven Pribramsky as the School Board Chairman and Dr. Duncan Mathewson III as the Vice-Chairman.

The December 11 workshop will start at 10:00 AM but will be held in Key West at the Administration Building. Please make note of the change in venue.

74 students qualify for TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN

During the month of November, 46 seventh-grade students and 28 upper-class students are signing scholarship contracts with TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN providing them “Scholarships, Mentors and Hope.”  They will be matched with their mentors at celebration ceremonies being held at schools across the Keys.  All supporters of Take Stock are welcome to attend.

Students Will Perform in State Competition

HornsMorgan Beaton, Plantation Key School, has been selected to represent the Monroe County School District in the Middle School State Honor Band. Kara Wiecjorek and Leo Molina, Coral Shores High School, and Ricardo Dominguez, Marathon High School, were selected for the High School State Honor Band. They will perform in Tampa on January 12th at the 2008 Florida Music Educator’s Conference.


Adult Education Grant Awarded

Monroe County Schools Adult Education Department has been awarded an Adult Education and Family Literacy, Adult General Education Competitive Grant.  Award amount is $110,550 for the 2007-2008 school year. Using these funds, Monroe County School District will provide adult education and literacy services to assist adults in the skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency. In addition, adults who are parents will receive assistance in obtaining educational skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children.


PACE Students Teach Recycling Awareness

PACESeveral students in the Practical Academic Cultural Education program at Marathon High created a recycling awareness program in Spanish to share with students at Stanley Switlik Elementary and the public. The project was made possible by a Florida Learn and Serve grant that requires students to meet educational standards and provide a service to the community to earn their grade. Teacher Teresa Thorne and Outreach Coordinator Rebecca Winter oversaw the project.

Ocean Reef Presents $100,000 to Take Stock

ORFAn anonymous donor has made a $100,000 contribution to the Ocean Reef Foundation.  At the request of this donor, these funds were to be transferred to the Monroe County Education Foundation and used to purchase scholarships for the Take Stock In Children program.

Resources Identified to Help Parents Understand MRSA

Sunny Booker, Safe Schools Coordinator, has prepared resources for parents - explaining the concern over news reports about bacterial skin infections, called Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA is a type of Staphylococcus aureus (staph) infection that is resistant to some antibiotics. A fact sheet will be going home with all students this week.  Full story

MHS Auditorium Construction Contains Fire

FireFire rescue was called to Marathon High School around 12:30 Sunday, Oct. 28 for a fire in the auditorium. The facility was under construction. All damage was contained to the second floor in a small room that served as a temporary office for the electrical contractor. No one was hurt. The fire was first reported by Heery Construction personnel who were working on the school property and called 9-1-1. According to Marathon Fire Chief Dale Beaver, smoke was coming from the roof on the southeast corner and heavy smoke came from a door. Fire rescue from Conch Key, Layton and Marathon responded to the call.

Sunshine State Scholars Announced

BoMonroe County School District is proud to announce three students who have been nominated by their schools for recognition as Sunshine State Scholars:  Robert Idsardi, Coral Shores High School, Gabriela Hernandez, Marathon High School and Noah Kent, Key West High School. 

Of the three nominees, Robert (Bo) Idsardi a senior at Coral Shores High School, will represent the district as Monroe County’s Sunshine State Scholar. Full story


Key West High Childcare Class Huge Success

KWHThe KWH students involved aspire to work with children when they get older.  However, some just want to learn how to be the best parent they can be.  Topics included are the different types of parenting styles, pregnancy/birth, caring for children, guiding and communicating with children, and meeting family responsibilities.  The students are currently interning at Poinciana, and will be switching  schools in the spring so the students can be exposed to as many different classrooms, teachers, and students as possible.   The staff has also  implemented the Ready-or-Not Tot program this year.  Full story


Monroe Receives Grants from SUCCEED FL Project

Superintendent Randy Acevedo has announced that Monroe County has received three $75,000 grants for the following career path high school programs: Key West High Medical Academy, Marathon High Architectural, Construction and Engineering Academy, and Coral Shores High   Environmental Academy.

Tech-Savvy School Board Ranks Third

Randy Acevedo, Superintendent, and Andy Griffiths, School Board Chairman, are pleased to announce that Monroe County School Board has ranked 3rd by the Center for Digital Education and National School Boards Association in the 2007 Digital School Boards award project. The Digital School Boards program examines how school boards and their districts are applying information technology to better engage local communities and constituents, and improve service delivery and quality of education to public schools.

District Awarded 5.4 Million for Enrichment Programs

Six schools in Monroe County will become community learning centers offering academic, artistic, and cultural enrichment opportunities to students and their families when school is not in session. These programs are designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program. Families of participating students will also be provided opportunities for literacy and related educational development. Students Earn Advanced Placement Scholar Awards  

APThirty students in Monroe County School District have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) Exams. Students took AP Exams in May 2007 after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on student’s performance on AP exams.

Science Literacy Grant Announced

Thanks to an Eckerd Family Foundation Grant, the school district has designed an extensive science outreach in partnership with the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Gardens, to increase science literacy and help students improve FCAT scores. More than 1,550 students are scheduled to experience a three-part program which includes two class sessions and one on-site visit.

Gerald Adams is an "A" School

Superintendent Randy Acevedo announced that Gerald Adams Elementary School received notification today that they are an “A” school for 2006-2007 school year.  Chancellor of Education Cheri Yecke, confirmed that Gerald Adams Elementary was one of 12 schools in the state that had an error in their final grade calculations. (Link to Updated List of School Grades). Trophia Foundation - Business Recognition Award

GRAThe Trophia Foundation received the Annual Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award for a focused effort to beautify campuses, as well as working with educators to provide enhanced learning. Through their dedication, amazing butterfly gardens have been planted and maintained. Field trips, classroom visits, and monetary sponsorships have allowed students of all ages and backgrounds to experience the delicate balance between people and nature. Families Building Better Readers

KLSKey Largo School staff presented “Families Building Better Readers” workshop the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 25. The interactive, themed presentation taught new literacy and comprehension strategies to 23 adults and 37 children for families to use at home. MYCP Hosts 5 Successful Challenge Days

MYCP

The Monroe Youth Challenge Program recently hosted five successful Challenge Days, two at Coral Shores, one in Marathon and two in Key West. In addition to the founders coming, the two other Challenge Day leaders were Jennifer Wilson and Khayree Shaheed.

Monroe Youth Challenge Program has  increased its outreach since inception in 2000, from 700 youth to more than 8000 youth.

New Parent Information Links Updated Daily

School Board Recognition - September 11th

Monroe County School Board recognized John "Pops" Stiglitz for his long and meritorious service and contributions by passing a resolution naming the Marathon High School Career and Technical Building "Pops" Place and by posting a fitting sign and marker on the building. Student Leadership Week-End

LeadershipLabor Day weekend changed the lives of a select group of students who attended Monroe Youth Challenge Program’s first-ever leadership retreat on Pigeon Key. The two-night camping style ‘Make Your Mark’ retreat was held for 62 students from middle and high schools across the county to improve the Developmental Assets® needed for success in their lives. Culinary Instructors visit Palm Beach County

Palm BeachCulinary instructors recently visited four high schools in Palm Beach that have Pro Start culinary programs.  The purpose of the visit was to meet with culinary students, instructors and administrators to gain ideas and best practices for advanced culinary programs in Monroe County.

CSH Advanced Placement Scores Improve

For the last four years Coral Shores has seen an upward trend in its Advanced Placement (AP) scores due in large part to, “a very impressive school improvement plan that had goals for AP,” said Superintendent Randy Acevedo. According to research done by the College Board who administers the test, students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely than their peers to complete a bachelor’s degree in four years or less. Coral Shores High School (CSHS) outranks the national mean average in four out of the six AP courses it offered.

LibraryAn important school supply—perhaps the most important supply of all—is a public library card for all school-age children.  

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month.  Now is the perfect time to make sure kids in the Keys are equipped with a Monroe County Public Library card, which can give children and young adults access to free homework help and to materials for reading or for research.  Going to the library can also help make life after school more fun, with free access to music, DVDs, the Internet and more.

Safety Awareness Day Huge Success

safety_awarenessThe First Child’s Safety Awareness Day held at Bayview Park Saturday, August 25, had about 500 people in attendance. “This free, family event was fun-filled and may very well save lives,” said Superintendent Randy Acevedo who partnered Monroe County School District with the Dade Lodge #14 of Free & Accepted Masons in Key West to develop Child’s Safety Awareness Day.

Take Stock Students Involved in Camp Experience

Take Stock In Children and the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches launch the Crossroads Adventure Camp experience. Beginning with this year’s senior class, all Take Stock In Children Scholars will be traveling to the Sheriff’s Caruth Camp in Inglis, Florida and participating in the Crossroads Adventure Camp.

VIP Season Passes Presented to MARC

District Awarded DJJ Prevention Grant

Monroe County School District has been awarded a Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) Prevention grant to open a Neighborhood Resource Center for children ages 8-15 and their parents. The Center will be housed in the Trinity Presbyterian Church Hall, 717 Simonton Street, and will serve children residing in Bahama Village.

District Recognized for Inclusion Practices

Superintendent Randy Acevedo has announced that the Florida Department of Education recently recognized the Monroe County School District as a top district in the state for the inclusion practices and student achievement. Inclusion is a term used to describe students with disabilities being included into “regular” classrooms.

Southernmost City Tops Nation in Education

Key West High School ranks in the top 5% of all U.S. Schools according to Newsweek and for the first time Monroe County has earned a district grade of A for two years in a row. “Student Success: Whatever it takes! is more than just a motto on a poster for us – it’s our daily life,” Acevedo adds. The school district has implemented many changes in the last four years to improve teacher retention and student achievement.

Administrative Changes for the 2007-08 School Year

Randy Acevedo, Superintendent of Monroe County School District has announced the selection of several positions for the 2007-2008 school year.  Connie Adams will be serving as principal to both Glynn Archer & Sigsbee Elementary Schools.  Henry Boza will be serving as assistant principal at Horace O’Bryant Middle School replacing Harry Russell. Mona Clark will be serving as assistant principal /site administrator at both Glynn Archer & Sigsbee Elementary Schools.

Superintendent Announces School Grades

Randy Acevedo, Superintendent of Schools, has announced that school grades have been posted by the Department of Education. Seven schools received an "A", five schools a "B" and  one school received a "C". Key West High and Glynn Archer Elementary are commended for going up a letter grade and it is noted the Coral Shores High had enough points for a B, but, was penalized for not showing enough growth in one area.

Back to School Conference for Staff

Monroe County School District is hosting a Back to School PD Conference for staff on August 14th and 15th at Coral Shores and Key West High. Some sessions are half day, some are full day, and some are two full days.  The selections offered are based on feedback from the Professional Development Needs Assessment and other indicators of need. When registering in My Learning Plan, please note dates when making choices and building  schedules.

Monroe County Receives $300,000 Reading Grant

Superintendent Randy Acevedo has announced a $300,000. Response to Intervention Research Grant (RTI) from the US Department of Education. The Student Services and Reading Department filed a joint application for the three-year grant to implement new strategies to improve student skills.

PKS Students Honored by Red Cross

PKS Authors

Plantation Key Middle School (PKS) students were honored by the American Red Cross Measles Initiative as “Advocates of the Month” for June with a full article on their web site and in their international newsletters. The seventh and eighth-grade students wrote and illustrated an original, full-color children’s book entitled “Have No Fear Walk with Me.” Proceeds from the sale of the book and other campaign efforts raised $1,500 – enough to save 1,500 lives.
