Service Learning: Celebrating Earth Day & Demonstrating Learning

Learn more about the State Farm Treasure Village Montessori School Project our students completed prior to their Earth Day Presentation.

Watch a slideshow of this Earth Day Project!

The Service:
After working on their Learn and Serve Project at the Plantation Hammock Preserve (PHP) located in Islamorada, students helped to design and coordinate an Earth Day event where they spent an entire school day demonstrating and presenting what they learned through the project to the entire school.

Over half of the students who attended said that they would teach other people the information they learned at the Earth day Celebration!

At our Earth Day celebration, participants planted pineapples, studied alternative energy, conducted solar energy experiments, and learned about recycling.

Pre and Post Test Results

Impact on Students Serving:

The students were given a pre and post test that related to the subjects of GPS/GIS, definitions of native trees, uses and benefits of native trees as they relate to hurricane mitigation, presentation skills, and hurricane preparedness.

The average student score on the pretest was 74%, the average score on the post test was 96%, showing an increase of knowledge and understanding of the subjects.

Behavior and attitude was measured by the participation grade through the use of a rubric created by the teachers. All 11 students scored higher according to the rubric during hands on activities and lower during academic instruction and activities.
