Challenge Day Reunion 2007! Positive energy, open encouragement and support were the common thread at the February 16 Challenge Day Reunion . More than 60 students and 20 adult volunteers gathered at Stanley Switlik Elementary School to continue their commitment to “Be the Change,” the mantra of the nationally popular program. Characteristic of Challenge Days, ice-breaking and socially-strengthening activities such as hug tag were designed for students specifically to maintain an accepting attitude of peers outside normal social circles, as well as provide an opportunity for students to plan their individual school’s eighth grade transition program in the spring, when they continue on to high school. Students also learned peer facilitator skills for making the transition seamless for fellow eighth grade students. This is the first year all three schools will incorporate this educational, hands-on, high-energy experience to help students from rival middle schools blend into one cohesive high school freshman class. Students actively create the ‘curriculum,’ including a PowerPoint presentation at the middle schools to highlight grading procedures, campus layout, registration, semester requirements, athletics, and extracurricular activities. A question and answer session at the end of each presentation allows exchange between incoming freshmen and existing lower- and upper-classmen. Plantation Key’s school counselor, Lisa M. Blakely, said, “After last year’s transition program, the [eighth grade] girls’ experience was overwhelmingly positive. They said they felt prepared and less nervous about ‘crossing the street’ into high school.” Challenge Day Volunteers Made The Difference! Read about how this year’s Challenge Days hosted by Monroe Youth Challenge Program (MYCP) in all three county high schools surpassed all projections with adult volunteers!
