County-wide, Students Pledge to be Drug Free During MYCP Sponsored Red Ribbon Week

KEY WEST (193 words) – For the fifth year in a row, Monroe Youth Challenge Program hosted a slate of promotional and educational events on every Monroe County public school Oct. 23-31.

Students made campaign decorations for their schools and signed pledges to be drug free. At Gerald Adams Elementary in Key West all the teachers and staff wore red. They honored students who wore the most red.

The median age at which children begin drinking is 12. Young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. “It’s imperative we support all school curriculums and staff with these important drug free messages,” Booker said.

Other Red Ribbon Week activities included a coordinated effort for the anti-smoking campaign truth truck to visit several schools countywide. It resulted in more than 1,500 students signing post cards to be mailed to major magazines asking them to stop publishing cigarette ads.

MYCP is a grass-root, non-profit organization whose mission is to foster acceptance, respect, and success in the youth of Monroe County. For more information call Booker at (305) 293-1400 ext. 53319 or go to www.monroe.k12.fl.us/mycp.
