Marathon High School Performing Arts Center Opens First Show ‘Famous’ Thursday, June 5

MARATHON, FL (292 words) – Voluntarily coordinated by Monroe Youth Challenge Program Director Sunny Booker, ‘Famous’ opens Thursday, June 5 at the Marathon High School in the newly constructed auditorium at 7 p.m. This is the inaugural performance in the facility.

Booker wrote the play specifically around the cast for Marathon. She said, “We have some amazing raw talent with the new kids stepping up in theater. There’s not much downtime. It’s a showcase of each kid’s talent with a hop, skip, and jump into the next kids’ talent and the audience will recognize selections of the production.”

Booker volunteered her time to direct the program with a culturally diverse cast that fits the mission of MYCP to foster acceptance, respect, and success in the youth of Monroe County. She also drew in a choreographer, Elizabeth Shanks, a graduate of the American Music Dramatic Academy in New York. Shanks traveled from New York City to assist Booker with the show.

The cast ranges from a sixth-grader at Stanley Switlik to boys who are usually on the football field with more than half of the cast and crew never participating in theatre. “Most shows I have directed in Marathon seem to be homogenous. The variety of this show makes it exciting – more interesting,” said Booker.

The show starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5 and repeats Friday, June 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students. General seating tickets may be bought in advance at Marathon High School or at the door if available.
