Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen Makes Appearance at MYCP Annual Awards Celebration

MARATHON, FL (233 words) – Monroe Youth Challenge Program garnered attention from local leaders such as County Commissioner George Neugent, school board members Debra Walker, Andy Griffiths and John Dick at their third annual Awards Celebration. A highlight of the evening is that Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen  came. She posed for pictures with students and reviewed half a dozen service learning projects before she congratulated Superintendent Randy Acevedo for supporting MYCP and doing a fantastic job with the youth of Monroe County.

MYCP, a grass-roots non profit organization that runs programs on every school campus in the county, hosted its annual awards celebration to recognize community partners and outstanding student participants in Marathon.

In addition to student service learning displays and a slide presentation showcasing the years’ programs and signature events, special emphasis was placed on honoring students and community partners who made the service learning projects possible.

Three volunteers of the year were recognized. For the Upper Keys, Phyllis Mitchell of Islamorada and Xochi Musser of Key Largo were chosen. The Middle Keys volunteer of the year award went to Marlene Morato of Marathon.

A county-wide project Ros-Lehtinen seemed most impressed with the Holocaust Memorial education. Monroe Youth Challenge Program is a project of the Monroe County Education Foundation to foster acceptance, respect, and success in the youth of Monroe County.
