Food and Nutrition Services


The Mission of the Food and Nutritional Services Department, of the Monroe County School District, in partnership with family and community, is to provide nutrition education along with appealing and nutritionally-sound meals to students and staff while operating in a cost effective manner, with excellence as a standard.  The Monroe County School District Food and Nutritional Services Department supports the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans in conjunction with the USDA Food Guide Pyramid.  Menus are planned to include a variety of foods that are low in sugar, fat and cholesterol.  Menu selections are designed to increase breads and grains, fruits and vegetables, as well as other food sources rich in vitamins and minerals.

Free and Reduced Price School Meals Application Information / Policy

Q&A: Children who qualify may get breakfast and lunch free or at the reduced price.


2009-20010 - Breakfast and Lunch Prices

  • Grades K-5 Breakfast $1.75, Lunch $2.25
  • Grades 6-12 Breakfast $1.75, Lunch $2.50
  • Adult Breakfast $2.25, Lunch $3.50

Reduced meal prices are set by the USDA and are currently .30 breakfast and .40 lunch.  Milk will remain at $.75.


2009-2010 IOU Policy

IOU charge limits:

  • Grades K-5 reduced priced meals $2.10

  • Grades K-5 full priced meals $12.00

  • Grades 6-12 reduced priced meals $2.10

  • Grades 6-12 full priced meals $12.75

Dollar limit is equal to 3 IOU’s for breakfast and 3 IOU’s for lunch. When a student has reached the dollar limit allowed, the parent will be responsible for providing meals until the account is paid. Students with a negative balance will not be allowed to purchase a la carte items.

Students will not be sent to the office to call home. No child will go without eating. Cafeteria managers will provide an alternate meal to those students who still do not bring in the money owed or who do not have a lunch with them without an IOU being issued.

 Monroe County District Wellness Policy
Reviewed by Health Committee,  updated and approved by School Board, August 27, 2008)
. The Monroe County School District Wellness Policy includes the following eight Components as established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The School Board will adopted a School Wellness Policy as required by Sect 204 of Public Law 108-265 and established by the School Health Advisory Committee.


Competitive Foods:

 Only food items offered and sold by the Food Services Program will be made available to students at elementary schools. Food items offered and sold by other School Board approved organizations may be made available to students at secondary schools, beginning one hour after the end of the meal service.  According to state regulation, foods may not be sold in competition with the school meals program prior to the start of the school day.


Sanitation / Cafeteria Inspections:

Florida statute 1013.12 says, "Each school cafeteria must post in a visible location and on the school Web site the school's semiannual sanitation certificate and a copy of its most recent sanitation inspection report." Food Services Participates in Keys Kids Fair

The Food Service Dept., along with assistance of the Superintendent, had a booth set up at the show giving away wrist bands that read Healthy Meals Healthy Minds, with a secret message inside the band. Free/Reduced meal applications were available and food service staff was available to assist parents. Winners of the Breakfast Week Contest Announced

The Department of Food Services has announced the winners of the high school "National Breakfast Week" contest. Winners of the Nike Book bags are: Meredith Rider, Marathon High School; Lops Nicolas, Key West High and Latrice Johnson, Coral Shores High.


Ethan, a 4th grade student at Sugarloaf School - was the winner of the Healthy Meals, Healthy Minds Contest. He won a bike and his meal will be named after him on the January menu.
