Schools Focus on
Homeland Security |
|
While
cities across the nation have seen public safety
agencies and school officials pull together after a
shooting or accident affecting a school, Monroe County
officials have pulled together ahead of time. In a
full-day workshop held Jan. 15 Monroe County Safe School
Coordinator Sunny Booker brought more than 40
county-wide school and emergency-related officials
together to review and improve the school system’s
crisis plan.

Please Read...Information on
MRSA |
Recently there have been many news reports about bacterial skin
infections, called Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus
(MRSA), within the school community. MRSA
is a type of Staphylococcus aureus (staph) infection that is
resistant to some antibiotics and
has been around for many years. In the past, MRSA has been found
almost entirely in healthcare settings; however increasingly in
recent years MRSA has also been found in the community. This
includes settings such as daycare
centers and schools.

| Child Safety Awareness Day August 25th |
It has often been said, “a child’s safety is everyone’s business.” Key West officials are taking that statement seriously. The First Child’s Safety Awareness Day is to be held at Bayview Park Saturday, August 25, 2007 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. This free, family event is not only fun-filled but may very well give you and your children the tools to save lives. While parents get free resources to keep their children safe, the kids can have fun and learn invaluable information. (click on picture to enlarge - Students at Poinciana on first day of school)

Superintendent
Acevedo was recently honored as a “2006 Who’s

recognized for his outstanding leadership and
partnership with the
Monroe Youth Challenge Program.
In tribute to Randy Acevedo’s state
recognition, a local presentation was also made to
him at this week’s school board meeting. The award
is of additional significance because Acevedo was
